Geralt is easily one of if not the strongest Witcher in history. Aside from his extensive experience, the White Wolf responded exceptionally well to the witcher mutations during the Trial of the Grasses, so much so that he was given additional mutations that further enhanced his already superhuman strength, reflexes, endurance, resilience, and agility.
But there are other exceptional Witchers — like the eight we mention below — that can still give him a tough fight and perhaps even best him in battle.
Ciri
In the best ending of Witcher 3 Ciri becomes a full-fledged witcher. In that role, she’s perhaps the greatest candidate to defeat Geralt, courtesy of her exceptional magical abilities. As the Lady of Space and Time, she can teleport and perhaps even slow down time. Coupled with her impressive sword skills, this may prove difficult even for someone as skilled as Geralt to deal with.
On top of that, Ciri is relatively young and still unlocking her full magical potential, which means she’s likely to develop even greater magical and swordfighting skills down the line.
Erland Of Larvik
Erland is a first-generation witcher appearing in the Gwent: The Witcher Card Game and The Witcher tabletop RPG. He founded the witcher School of the Griffin, which highlights his intelligence and combat abilities, and held his own against Arnaghad, another formidable witcher.
Erland also killed many powerful monsters, including dragons, cyclopes, and higher vampires, making it clear he’s a skilled warrior. Given all this, a fantasy match-up against Geralt would have been a serious contest for the White Wolf.
Letho Of Gulet
The towering Letho of Gulet is the main antagonist of Witcher 2 and also makes an appearance in Witcher 3. His prowess is on full display in the second game, with the cinematic trailer showcasing the jaw-dropping assassination of King Demavend and his entire entourage. Letho is not only brutally strong but also surprisingly agile for a man of his size. On top of that, he’s highly cunning and intelligent.
More importantly, he holds the distinction of being the only witcher on this list to actually best Geralt in a fight. We’d still expect Geralt to win most of the time, but Letho would be one of his toughest opponents.
Gezras Of Leyda
As per the information in Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, Gezras of Leyda is another older-generation witcher who went on to found the Cat School. Gerzas is notable for his aggressive and unpredictable fighting style, as a result of failed mutations that amplified, rather than dull his emotions.
A half-elf, he was left for dead after being deemed a failure. But Gezras endured, eventually getting his revenge on the sorcerers who wronged him. Given how much Geralt struggled with mages in the books, this is enough to show that Gezras would be a formidable foe.
In a hypothetical fight, Geralt’s calm and methodical style, combined with superior training and experience, would likely give him an advantage over Gezras’ erratic approach. But it certainly wouldn’t be a walk in the park.
Eskel
While he may not be as accomplished and famous as his close friend, Eskel is still a well-rounded, veteran witcher. His battle against Caranthir shows just as much, with the elf only gaining an upper hand after using his teleportation skills.
The Witcher books also note that Eskel is about as strong as Geralt but emanates an even greater magical aura. Overall, Geralt would likely still win thanks to his additional mutations. But Eskel is definitely just as skilled and would give the White Wolf a tough challenge.
Arnaghad
Arnaghad is yet another first-generation Witcher mentioned in the Witcher TTRPG and Gwent game. He formed the Witcher Bear school, which is quite fitting given his imposing physique. It’s possible that Arnaghad’s raw physical strength was superior to even that of Geralt, making it so any direct blow could end the White Wolf’s life. We still think Geralt would win given his superior agility and reflexes, but it certainly wouldn’t be an easy fight.
Ivar Evil-Eye
Ivar Evil-Eye is a witcher mentioned in Witcher 3 and Gwent: The Witcher Card Game. Just like Geralt, he responded positively to the witcher experiments, leading to him enduring further mutations that gave him his so-called Evil Eye: the ability to see other worlds and have visions of the Wild Hunt. Ivar would go on to form the School of the Viper.
Geralt and Ivar’s battle would have an unpredictable outcome, given that Evil-Eye is one of the only known witchers to respond to the mutations as well as Geralt.
Iwan
The School of the Manticore is mentioned in The Witcher TTRPG and the lore added in the Blood & Wine expansion. At the heart of this school’s inception is Iwan, a witcher who was strong enough to fend off a group of manticores during a harrowing escort job. He also became the Zerrikanian Queen’s personal protector, further proving his formidable combat skills.
While we’d still have our money on Geralt in a duel, Iwan is likely to pose a serious challenge. His extensive experience, practical combat skills, and use of a meteoritic steel & silver shield would make him a formidable foe.
I’m a passionate gamer with a soft spot for RPGs who has been writing about all things gaming for seven years and counting. The Witcher is one of my favorite franchises that I can’t get enough of, with Geralt’s adventures embedded in my brain ever since the first Witcher game blew my mind!
