The Witcher is one of the most valuable video game IPs of all time, with Geralt’s amazing trilogy ending on a high note.
It’s safe to say that the White Wolf’s story has drawn to a close, and fans waiting for The Witcher 4 (codenamed Polaris) will get to play a new protagonist spanning a new trilogy. Here are six potential characters for the role, including some established as well as brand-new possibilities.
Table of Contents
Lynx School Witcher
One of the only things we know about the next Witcher title (called Witcher 4 by fans, despite CDPR rejecting that name) is that it was teased with a Lynx medallion.
That implies the existence of a new Lynx Witcher school that may play an important role in the game. That means the potential protagonist could be a completely new Lynx School witcher. This school does not exist in the Witcher books and is entirely the creation of CDPR.
Letho Of Gulet
Another CDPR-only creation, the cunning Viper school witcher Letho serves as the main antagonist of Witcher 2 and also makes a small appearance in Witcher 3.
Letho quickly became a fan favorite thanks to his imposing look, skills with the blade, and cunning mind. In fact, some players have expressed a desire to play a Witcher game from his perspective. While it’s a highly unlikely prospect, especially because you can choose to kill him in Witcher 2, it certainly would make for a fun game.
Vesemir
Vesemir’s fate in The Witcher 3 is bound to make players shed a tear, especially for long-time fans of the series. Given this character’s esteemed legacy, a younger Vesemir would make an excellent Witcher 4 protagonist.
Netflix already ran with this idea in Nightmare of the Wolf, which made for an entertaining watch even if the changes surrounding the sacking of Kaer Morhen didn’t sit well with fans. CDPR could definitely pull off a new trilogy exploring a young Vesemir’s exploits, at a time when Witchers were more common.
Ciri
The most obvious shout for a new protagonist in the new Witcher game is Ciri herself, with Witcher 3 doing an excellent job setting the stage for her character. She certainly has enough depth, combat skills, and a unique angle (as a Witcher only in name, since she didn’t undergo the mutations).
The three possible Witcher 3 endings do make things a bit tricky for a sequel, but it’s certainly not an impossible task. The bad ending can be ignored, and the two good endings can be amalgamated with some clever writing to make Ciri’s role in a new Witcher game make sense.
A Custom Witcher
Of course, there are strengths and advantages to using an established, fleshed-out character like Geralt. But there’s no reason CDPR can’t allow you to make your own custom witcher from the ground up, following the footsteps of their other recent title, Cyberpunk 2077.
Players will have a great time deciding the school their witcher comes from and the backstory that put them on the path to becoming a legendary monster hunter. It would also be fun to play from the perspective of a young Witcher who is just going out into the world.
One Witcher for Each School
Here’s a bold idea: what if Witcher 4 has 4-5 unique witchers for each major school: Bear, Griffin, Cat, Viper, and Wolf? They could remove Wolf to make it a bit easier (since we already played from their perspective).
Each would have his unique character and backstory, and choosing one would give you a different prologue and affect the main storyline and certain side quests. We saw this idea discussed on reddit and we really liked it. It would also give the game massive replay value.
P.S. It’s been revealed that Geralt will make an appearance in Witcher 4, but only as a side character.
