Gaunter O’Dimm is one of the most intriguing characters in The Witcher 3. Arguably the best antagonist in the game, he seems to have godlike powers and appears to be the Devil of the Witcher universe.
What you probably didn’t notice, however, is that Gaunter appears many times as a background NPC during the Hearts of Stone. Observing Geralt from a distance, he’s typically only present for a split moment during a cutscene. Here are several appearances you might’ve missed.

The Beginning Of The Hearts of Stone DLC
When Geralt checks out a notice board near the Seven Cats Inn, his attention is diverted toward a man asking for help with a massive monster in the sewers. While he tells Geralt to speak to Olgierd von Everec in the Garin Estate for further details, keen-eyed players can notice an innocuous figure dressed like one of the villagers for a split second.
He’s none other than Gaunter O’Dimm himself, making it clear that he was going to trap Geralt in his wily plan from the get-go once the witcher agreed to slay this monster.
At The Wedding When Geralt Is Possessed
The wedding that players attend with Shani when Geralt is possessed by Vlodomir is one of the highlights of Hearts of Stone, allowing fans to enjoy a merry time. While O’Dimm makes his presence known near the end of these celebrations, he also appears twice in the background before this moment.
In both these instances, he’s clad in his festive outfit with a flower wreath on his head, presumably keeping an eye on the pair and ensuring that Vlodomir doesn’t overstep his bounds.
The Borsodi Brothers’ Auction House
After learning of Olgierd’s three wishes, Geralt can choose to scout out the auction house and figure out a way to get his hands on Maximillian Borsodi’s estate. He’s granted entry as a guest of Vimme Vivaldi, allowing him to interact with some colorful personalities and bid on valuable goods.
During his time, the keen eyes of Gaunter O’Dimm track him in the background, dressed to the nines in an opulent outfit with a flamboyant hat to match. It’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, much like his other fleeting appearances in Hearts of Stone.
When Trying To Save Casimir Bassi
When players are tasked with finding a crew for the heist, they can encounter the explosive Casimir Bassi. The dwarf is on the verge of blowing himself up after his wife’s affair, and players must talk him down so that he decides to live and become a part of the heist at the auction house.
At the start of this cutscene, an observant O’Dimm is present in the background once again, clad in unassuming clothing that helps him blend into the surroundings as a villager.
Disguised As A Guard During The Heist
After the heist doesn’t go according to plan, the alarm rings and the guards surround the auction house. This leads to a tense moment as Geralt negotiates to buy some time until the vault is opened. A fine background detail that most players miss is that O’Dimm masquerades as one of the guards too.
At The Start Of The Game
Without a doubt, Gaunter’s most interesting appearance is at the start of the game, in the White Orchard Inn. Here, we encounter him as a run-of-the-mill NPC, introducing himself as a humble merchant or the “Man of Glass.” We have absolutely no idea about his true identity and omnipotent abilities.
The fact that he knew what the witcher wanted and gently nudged him in the right direction before disappearing hinted towards his mysterious power that wasn’t on full display until Hearts of Stone.
Other Undocumented Appearances
The sheer number of models featuring Gaunter O’Dimm in other outfits makes it clear that he’s a watchful presence in Hearts of Stone across numerous cutscenes. We can see him dressed as a villager, guard, merchant, and other roles. Given that he appears for a brief moment before disappearing altogether, it’s easy to see why people have missed most of his cameos.
