Witcher 3 Next-Gen Update Postponed Indefinitely

It’s been a long time since we first heard that there was a Witcher 3 next-gen edition in the works. Two years of a pandemic have run its course and players were expecting some news. The next-gen update was expected in Q2 2022 but CDPR announced on April 13 on Twitter that it’s been postponed.

They “decided to have our in-house development team conduct the remaining work on the next-gen version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.” Originally, the next-gen update was supposed to be complete by Russia-based Saber Interactive, who already worked on the rather impossible Nintendo Switch version (and did a great job).

Taking into consideration today’s geopolitical situation and the conflict in Ukraine, it’s quite possible that this influenced the decision of CD Projekt RED to move the development back home to Poland.

The announced next-gen edition is supposed to feature visual and technical improvements, including things like fast loading times and ray tracing. It will even incorporate some content from fan-made mods, like the HD rework project. The next-gen update will come as a free upgrade on PS5/Xbox Series X and PC for all current owners.

Another thing that many players have really been looking forward to was the Netflix-based Witcher 3 DLC, which would mark the first new Witcher 3 content since the Blood and Wine expansion came out in 2016. Nothing is known about its contents, but that did not stop fans from dreaming and speculating.

It would appear that there is a long wait ahead of us, although CD Projekt RED did say that they are “currently evaluating the scope of work to be done and thus have to postpone Q2 release until further notice.”

We will, of course, keep you posted on any news and developments as soon as we hear about them.

The Witcher 4 was recently teased with a single image featuring the witcher school of the Lynx and, just like yours, our thirst for new Witcher content is greater than it has been in a long time!
